Superintendent Brad Bixler told the Helix School Board on Nov. 19 that district enrollment stood at 186 — five fewer than at the same time last year and nine below the district’s estimate for 2025–26 — and he expects two elementary students to move away later in the school year.
Bixler invited the board to join a community feed and reviewed several operational items. He said the district is continuing an Interagency MOU with InterMountain ESD to contract a regional sportswriter; Helix’s annual share for that service is $922.45. He also reported a recent purchase of K–5 supplemental math materials from Zaner‑Bloser for $9,561.09 to support math intervention groups.
On facilities, Bixler said Spencer Smith (IMEG) was awarded the RFQ to design the construction specifications connected to the seismic grant; IMEG will schedule site visits and begin design work. The board later approved IMEG’s proposal for structural engineering services during the meeting. Bixler noted other recent building work: repair of a practice‑gym fan and completion of a kitchen AC repair by a local contractor.
On state funding context, Bixler told the board that the Oregon Department of Education circulated an early draft scenario outlining possible statewide education reductions of 2.5% and 5% should the Legislature move forward with cuts; he said Helix was not currently planning programmatic changes but would monitor state guidance and budget forecasts.
What’s next: IMEG is expected to begin site visits as part of seismic planning and the district will integrate the Zaner‑Bloser materials into its K–5 intervention program; the business manager expects to present audit findings at a board meeting in the new year.
