The Topeka City Infrastructure Committee voted unanimously July 21 to approve a $2.35 million design-build package to identify and repair concrete deterioration at three road corridors in northeast Topeka.
Director Tryon told the committee the package covers three locations — Fairlawn/6th, Cypress and Sycamore — and aims to assemble a design-build team that will recommend a repair method and carry out work in 2027. "We're looking for a repair method that gets us a uniform drive surface without removing all of that concrete," Tryon said, citing joint failure as the principal issue.
Council members asked clarifying questions about project limits and traffic impacts. Staff said the work will usually allow one travel lane to remain open and that temporary, intermittent closures are likely only where contractors need to work within a section. Tryon added that the procurement would evaluate options such as sawcutting and infill with an overlay or full concrete replacement, noting the team will seek the most cost-effective method.
Deputy Mayor Michelle Hoefer moved to approve the design-build procurement and budget; Councilwoman Ortiz seconded. The committee recorded a 3–0 vote in favor.
Tryon said the team would begin evaluation after the contract is awarded and aimed for construction in 2027. The item now moves to the governing body for final approval and execution of the contract.
