Committee recommends honors dance course and approves small AR updates to go to full board

The Beaufort County School District Academic Committee voted on Feb. 25, 2025, to forward a recommendation to the full Board of Education to approve honors-level dance courses (grades 5–8) that were proposed by Hilton Head Island High School.

Staff presented the application and said the course meets the state's three required areas for honors designation — course content, materials and assessment — and adds a level of rigor above college-preparatory standards. "Students will develop a portfolio, engage in research on choreographers, and complete formative and summative assessments," a staff presenter said. The syllabus and materials will remain on file with the district for auditing.

Why it matters: forwarding the honors course expands curricular rigor and offers additional college-preparatory opportunities in the performing arts; staff said other high schools are likely to adopt similar courses once teachers have access to the honors-course model.

The committee also reviewed two small administrative-regulation edits. For IS 42 (research applications), the district will add a nondiscrimination clause and update the point of contact from Lana Simmons to Denise Hook. For IS 48 (promotion, retention and acceleration), staff removed a clause referencing the state exit exam after South Carolina eliminated that requirement.

A committee member moved to recommend approval of the honors dance courses; the motion was seconded and staff clarified the recommendation would be forwarded to the full board for final action. The committee did not make final curricular approvals at this meeting; the recommendation means the full Beaufort County School District Board of Education will review the course at an upcoming meeting.

Board members asked practical questions about coursework and implementation: whether syllabi would be created for each dance style and whether the course would be districtwide. Staff said the portfolio model allows student choice and that teachers at other schools can adapt the course once the honors framework is available. One board member cautioned against expanding offerings without ensuring adequate participation so programs are sustainable.

Next steps: the committee recommended the honors dance courses to the full board; staff will forward the AR edits and the course packet to the full board for formal consideration.
