Graham council to hold public hearing on a potential downtown social district

Graham, N.C. — The Graham City Council voted May 12 to hold a public hearing to gather additional public and business input on a possible downtown social district that could allow coordinated open-container activities during defined times or events.
Mayor Chelsea Dickey said she had discussed social districts with neighboring towns and that several local businesses had expressed interest. Speakers at the meeting were split: some business owners favored special-event social districts or limited-day operations, while others, including Council Member Bonnie Whitaker, expressed concern about permitting open containers that would change the everyday atmosphere of downtown.
Council Member Jim Young moved to schedule a public hearing to hear from more business owners and residents; the motion passed 4-1 with Mayor Pro Tem Ricky Hall dissenting. Staff will provide notice and gather additional stakeholder input ahead of the hearing.
