Select Board approves Powder Mill Road underpass mural for Bruce Freeman Rail Trail

The Select Board voted to approve a mural for the Powder Mill Road underpass on the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail.
Mimi Graney, economic vitality manager, said the town received 54 applications and the advisory team recommended a design by Jane Holland and Laura Buscemi that emphasizes the natural environment and a walk-by scale for the tunnel. "Part of what was really great about their design is...it really kind of captured the seasonality," Graney said.
The artists described design choices and their approach to durability and graffiti mitigation: power-washing, exterior-grade primers and sealing, and design choices intended to discourage tagging. Graney said power-wash quotes were approximately $5,400 and that ARPA funds would support the work.
S2 moved to approve the final design and S3 seconded; the board voted in favor. MassDOT must still approve the mural because it owns the bridge, and the town will coordinate the required site preparation and maintenance plan.
