Augusta County school board rejects proposal to form standing academic committee, 4–3

Opponents warned the committee risked micromanaging the division’s trained professionals. ‘‘If we let people have their responsibility, let them build what we need to be built, then we will get there,’’ Mr. Ward said, urging the board to rely on staff reports and to avoid intervening in day‑to‑day instruction.
After extended discussion about scope and charges, the board voted on the motion to establish the academic committee. The motion failed 4–3, leaving oversight responsibilities with the full board and the division’s administration. The board did not adopt any alternative reporting schedule at the meeting.
The immediate procedural step is unchanged: staff will continue to provide reports as requested, and the board may revisit the topic at a future meeting.
