The Augusta County School Board approved a request to move forward with a VDOT easement that will add second lanes and a roundabout near the Wilson Elementary and Valley Career & Technical Center complex.
Staff displayed VDOT renderings and explained how the easement would take small strips of property across several school parcels, including a roughly 15-foot encroachment on the front of Wilson Elementary. "We're happy to answer any questions that you have, but we do require board approval, to get moving with our attorney, to sign off on the agreement," Superintendent Dr. Troxell (S3) said.
Board members asked about reimbursement. One speaker referenced about $158,000 allocated to Augusta County Schools in the documents; staff showed component figures of $98,000 and $74,000 that together are roughly that amount. The transcript recorded that the easement would be a dedicated turning lane and that sidewalks/walk paths would be relocated as needed.
After discussion the board approved moving forward with the easement and authorized staff and the county attorney to finalize the agreement; the motion carried by voice vote, 7–0.
