School board approves DCJS grant for safety coordinator, policy update and multiple routine items

The Amelia County School Board approved multiple action items Tuesday, including a grant appropriation to hire new school safety personnel and a policy update clarifying parental-consent language.
Finance Director Mr. Trump provided the grant briefing and asked the board to appropriate $31,210 from a DCJS award to security expenditures and local revenue for FY26 so the division can begin hiring a threat-assessment/management coordinator. “In a letter dated 10/23/2025, Amelia County was notified of a DCJS grant award in support of new school safety personnel,” Mr. Trump said, adding the appropriation represents half of the state special funds the division expects to receive. The board moved, seconded and approved the appropriation.
The board also approved religious-exemption requests submitted by four families covering eight students. Dr. Manley summarized the item: “We have a request from 4 families totaling 8 students, who are asking for religious exemption status,” and, after a motion and second, the board voted in favor.
Members adopted an update to Policy LVD based on recent VSBA language intended to clarify the difference between expressed and written consent. Dr. Manley explained the VSBA revision was added in November 2025 to make parent-consent language explicit; the board approved the revision following discussion.
Other routine approvals included declaring a list of surplus items (file cabinets, kitchen and HVAC equipment, a portable science sink, a balance beam, water fountains and library books) and accepting several donations: continued support from Launch Family Entertainment Park for a leading program, two donations to the FFA for national-convention travel and a portion of proceeds from Amelia’s Kitchen for Amelia County High School programs. The board discussed donation logistics for surplus library books and approved donation or disposal per policy.
Several consent-agenda items also passed unanimously, including the personnel agenda, minutes and bills. Where votes were taken the clerk recorded “Aye” from members and no opposition was voiced.
No substantive debate blocked any of the items; presenters said some administrative follow-ups remain (job description development for the new safety coordinator and timing for grant reimbursements).
