Village approves $5,000 pilot for sidewalk grinding program

The Village of Bloomington Board voted unanimously on Oct. 6 to hire Safe Step Safe Sidewalk Solutions for a $5,000 sidewalk repair pilot aimed at grinding dangerous lips and trip hazards.
Director of Public Works Leitzinger told trustees that neighboring towns use the service and most municipalities begin with a $5,000 commitment; the contractor grinds what it can and recommends full replacements when grinding is insufficient. Village President Robert McLimans said roughly $10,000 is budgeted for 2026 sidewalk work and proposed committing $5,000 to the Safe Step program.
Trustees approved the motion (moved by McLimans, seconded by Chasity Allen). Leitzinger agreed to develop a plan identifying sidewalks that could be eliminated and to provide cost estimates for removal and for additional repairs.
Separately, the board approved a $1,500 repair to a sidewalk lip near the Legion building (motion Dennis Moris/second Chasity Allen). Leitzinger also reported a $3,075 quote to fix a cracked storm drain at BCN and Pleasant Street; trustees noted that quote might change pending a field inspection of subsurface piping.
The board’s action directs public works to proceed with the Safe Step pilot and to return with a prioritized plan and cost estimates for further sidewalk work ahead of final budgeting decisions.
