Village fire official warns after deck deep-fryer fire; offers extinguisher training

An agency official reporting to the Ravena Village board on July 21 described responding to a deck fire caused when oil in a deep-fryer overflowed and ignited. The official said portable fire extinguishers were used to put out the flames before the fire trucks arrived and that damage to the deck was minimal.
The official warned homeowners not to attempt to extinguish oil fires with water, saying that water can spread burning oil. "You cannot extinguish a fire with that oil with water because if you spray water on it... it'll just splash it and it'll spread," the agency official said, and recommended dry-chemical extinguishers or fire blankets.
The fire official thanked Sergeant Arnold of Queenman's Police Department for first response actions and offered free training at the firehouse on the correct use of portable extinguishers, describing the basic technique: pull the pin, aim at the base, squeeze and sweep.
The board did not vote on new regulations; the official's briefing was informational and included a public-safety recommendation for residents to keep a portable extinguisher or fire blanket near grills and cooking appliances.
