Lyman to press MDOT for compensation after road damage, schedules Peach Orchard Road hearing

At the meeting, the board discussed a draft letter to the Maine Department of Transportation seeking consideration of compensation for damage to Walker and Day roads and covered related local concerns.

Joe Wagner (speaker 2) reviewed the draft and said he had been advised by a local electrician that Arundel Public Works controls timing at the Hill Road–Route 111 intersection; Wagner recommended initially calling Arundel (contact: Ben Burn) to request a timing adjustment and to follow up with a letter to MDOT. He asked staff to attach photographs documenting roadway damage to the MDOT correspondence.

Wagner said he also included background on recent MDOT initiatives (a four-way stop at Route 35 and South Wardborough Road and the new traffic light at Route 111 and Day/Kennebunk Pond Roads) and discussed using the Municipal Partnership Program as possible funding support. Board members cautioned against adding too many items to the letter and agreed staff should focus the communication on the principal request.

In related business, the Select Board set a public hearing for the abandonment process for Peach Orchard Road on Sept. 8 to meet statutory notice requirements; the town manager said the hearing would be followed by a subsequent select-board vote. The board also discussed logistics for a special town meeting warrant and early voting dates related to upcoming elections.

Next steps: staff will send the MDOT letter with photo attachments and follow up with Arundel Public Works regarding signal timing; notices for the Peach Orchard Road public hearing will be issued to abutters.
