Brookings schools to form committee to study use of artificial intelligence in classrooms

Dr. Summer Schulz, superintendent of Brookings School District 05-1, said the district is forming a committee to study artificial intelligence and how it should be used in classrooms.
"This committee... we're gonna really dig into what we feel is important in learning and teaching," Schulz said, adding she will give committee members preset reading and ask them to evaluate research and data. She said the district already has an "AI roadmap and AI guidance" and intends to maintain a vetted list or "sandbox" of approved tools for teachers and students.
Schulz said the committee has two central aims: to identify places where technology expands learning and where it may interfere with problem-solving, writing and literacy skills. "At what point is the technology interfering with some of those problem solving, writing, literacy skills that our students need?" she asked, saying the district does not want a "wild west" approach to classroom AI.
No committee membership list, timeline for recommendations, or formal policy language was provided in the interview. Schulz emphasized the district will ground decisions in research and classroom data before approving broad teacher or student use of particular AI tools.
