Goessel USD 411 board approves driver-ed vehicle, rooftop HVAC and audit engagement

The Goessel USD 411 Board of Education on Monday approved three administrative actions: the purchase of a 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid for the district's driver education program, a low-bid contract for a 15-ton rooftop HVAC unit for the junior/high school auditorium, and an audit engagement for the current fiscal year.
The board approved purchase of a 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid from Hillsboro Ford at a cost not to exceed $16,000, to be paid from driver’s education funding, contingent on the vehicle being fitted with a driver's education brake. Ben Schrag moved the approval and Bryant Miller seconded; the motion carried 4 to 1, with board member Sara Hiebert recorded as the lone vote against the purchase.
The rooftop HVAC unit for the junior/high school auditorium was awarded to Goering Hardware, which submitted the lowest bid of $29,540.98 for a 15-ton RTU. The board reviewed competing bids—Trane (through Flaming’s Inc.) at $29,757 and Lennox (also through Flaming’s Inc.) at $32,669—and moved to accept the low bid. Patrick Flaming moved the award and Ben Schrag seconded; the vote was unanimous, 5 to 0.
For audit services, the board approved an engagement letter with Knudsen, Monroe & Co., LLC for the current fiscal year. Sara Hiebert moved to approve the engagement and Patrick Flaming seconded; the motion carried 5 to 0.
On the consent agenda earlier in the meeting the board approved financial reports—including a check listing of $61,544.39 and district credit card usage entries of $3,304.56 and $2,149.95—and approved the appointment of Carrie Soukup as the Goessel High School forensics sponsor. Those consent items carried 4 to 0.
The board also reviewed several discussion items listed on the agenda, including a Marion County Special Education Cooperative report to be presented by Sara Hiebert, legislative updates from Bryant Miller and Patrick Flaming, procedures for adding a new junior/high school KSHSAA sport, alternative dates for the district banquet, a second read of the USD 411 Transportation Handbook updates, and a first read of KASB December policy updates. No formal board action on those discussion items was recorded in the minutes.
The board entered executive session to discuss an individual employee’s performance under the Kansas Open Meetings Act (KOMA) exception for non-elected personnel; the board said it would return to open meeting at 8:48 p.m. The minutes record that several members and the clerk left the open meeting area shortly before the executive session start; no substantive personnel outcomes were recorded in the public minutes.
The board adjourned at 8:48 p.m.; its next regular meeting is scheduled for Jan. 13, 2025, at 7:00 p.m.
