Parents urge later school-year start; board agrees to explore options after regional talks

A group of parents and students told the Augusta County School Board on Tuesday that starting school in early August shortens summer opportunities and harms student well-being, urging the board to consider shifting the start date to mid- or late August.

"Summer matters," said Elizabeth Shreckeyes, a Stanton parent, who said camps, aquatics and other youth programs lose staff and student participants when school begins in early August. Mason Shrekeyes, a Stanton High freshman, told the board that camps and internships provide growth experiences he would not want to give up. "Starting school a little later will let students fully benefit from summer programs and personal growth experiences while still succeeding academically," he said.

Dr. Griffin moved that the district survey parents, teachers and community members about a later start date, proposing the district gather broad input before planning next year's calendar. Board members responded that calendar decisions are complicated by regional programs shared with Stanton and Waynesboro; several members said any change should be coordinated across the three jurisdictions.

Superintendent Dr. Bond advised the board to confer with the other two superintendents first and suggested waiting to run a collaborative survey until December or January so the three systems could participate. After discussion about timing and staff workload, Dr. Griffin withdrew her motion to allow the superintendent time to consult with counterparts and for staff to prepare options.

No change to the calendar was approved at the meeting. Board members said the topic will return for further discussion at the January retreat or at a future meeting after inter-district conversations and additional data collection.
