The Petersburg Borough School District Board of Education on April 15 approved the adoption of a new math curriculum and authorized purchase of related materials and professional development totaling $144,794.01.
The motion to adopt the math curriculum was made by Board President Sarah Holmgrain and seconded by Kari Petersen; the motion passed with three yeas and two absences (Carey Case and Katie Holmlund absent).
The approval came amid a series of routine agenda actions. The board also ratified a three-year labor agreement between the Petersburg District Support Personnel (PDSP) and the Petersburg School District covering 2025–2028; that motion, made by Holmgrain and seconded by Niccole Olsen, passed by the same recorded margin.
Other formal actions taken at the meeting included approval of board policy updates in first reading, adoption of Draft #1 of the 2025–26 school calendar, authorization to participate in a cooperative agreement with the Alaska Public Risk Alliance (APRA) via a board resolution, and approval of the consent agenda covering March 2025 accounting, bills, payroll and electronic fund transfers (which listed $913,912.52 in the documented items).
Board members moved and voted on routine procedural items at the start of the meeting: President Sarah Holmgrain called the meeting to order at 6:03 p.m., announced a quorum, and led the Pledge of Allegiance. The board approved the evening’s agenda by motion earlier in the meeting.
Superintendent Taylor and school principals and directors submitted written administrative reports to the board, including reports from the elementary and MS/HS principals, the activities director, special education/testing coordinator, facilities and maintenance, technology, and food service. The board opened a public hearing on Indian Education but recorded no testimony.
Board members received a draft FY26 budget presentation during the meeting; the presentation was listed in the meeting materials and was discussed but no budget vote or adoption occurred at this meeting. The board also briefly discussed graduation logistics; the transcript does not record specific dates or final decisions on graduation.
The board adjourned at 7:30 p.m.; the meeting minutes were signed by Board Secretary Sanah Holay.
What’s next: Implementation steps for the adopted math curriculum (purchasing materials and scheduling professional development) and contract administration for the PDSP labor agreement will follow the board’s approvals. The FY26 budget will return for further discussion and any required action at future meetings.
