Rolette County 911 Coordinator Ryan Hiatt told the Rolla City Council on May 20 that the city’s current radio network can lose reception inside buildings and recommended the council purchase three rugged, three-button cellular phones to serve as a backup link to dispatch and body cameras. The council approved the purchase by motion of Councilmember Paul Frydenlund, seconded by Damond Schemmel; the roll-call vote was unanimous.
Hiatt described the phones as three-button devices with push-to-talk capability to give officers fast access to dispatch and body-camera linking when radios are not reliable indoors. The council directed staff to purchase the phones through Verizon Wireless as recommended and retained the existing radio equipment as the primary communications method.
The vote concluded one of the meeting’s more detailed operational discussions; no additional budget amendment or detailed contract terms were recorded in the minutes. The purchase was approved during New Business and will be processed through normal procurement procedures.
