The police chief told council two suspects have been charged in connection with a recent double homicide and commended the criminal investigations team for a quick, active probe.
During his presentation the chief listed upcoming community events — 'Pops with a Cop' on Aug. 1 at Tractor Supply parking lot and National Night Out on Aug. 4 at Kirkwood Adams Recreation Center — and said the department holds bimonthly community meetings at Challenger Recreation Center. He also described a potential funding opportunity: a vendor contacted the department about a technology grant that would fully fund equipment without a local match and could be applied for within a few weeks.
On the homicide update the chief said the investigation remains active but that two individuals have been charged in relation to the deaths and praised Captain Phillips, the criminal investigations team, and patrol officers for their response.
"Roanoke Rapids is a safe place," the chief told council, adding that every city has problems but that the department has quality people who respond to incidents. He encouraged residents to attend community meetings and the department’s outreach events.
Why it matters: The update both informs the public about progress in a serious criminal case and signals department priorities on community engagement and potential technology investments to address violent crime.
