The Long Beach Board of Aldermen voted Jan. 17 to adopt an amendment to section 24‑10 of the city code that exempts duly permitted and licensed indoor shooting galleries from the local prohibition on discharging firearms.
City staff explained the ordinance would establish a permitting framework and direct the police chief, fire chief and building official to develop rules and inspection criteria for any licensed indoor shooting gallery. “The ordinance itself also requires and authorizes the chief of police, the fire department chief, and the building code officer to work together to establish some rules and regulations and regarding the criteria for permitting and inspection,” a staff member said.
After brief discussion, the board conducted a roll‑call vote; the mayor called the roll and the motion carried with all present voting in favor.
The newly adopted ordinance emphasizes coordinated review by public‑safety and building officials before issuing permits. City staff said they had circulated a copy of the draft in advance and that the measure will be implemented through administratively adopted permitting rules and inspections.
