The Long Beach Board of Aldermen accepted a $500,000 Tadlands grant for harbor improvements and authorized a change order for eastern bulkhead work during the Nov. 5 meeting.
Mayor George L. Bass announced the award of $500,000 from state legislators via the Tadlands grant program to be used for harbor improvements. The board moved to accept the grant and voted in favor.
Engineer David (representing Overstreet & Associates) described a contractor proposal to crush existing riprap stockpiled east of Cleveland Avenue down to a smaller size and reuse the crushed concrete as backfill. He said the approach would simplify backfilling and improve compaction, leading to a more durable end product, and that the structural engineer supported the method. Staff presented an estimated additional cost of $79,750 for the crushing work but noted the contractor would sort the pile and the final amount is likely to be lower than the estimate.
An alderman voiced initial concern about the additional dollars but said the long-term benefits justified the change order; the board approved the change order on voice vote.
What's next: Staff will finalize the change-order scope and costs with the contractor and proceed with harbor improvements funded in part by the Tadlands grant.
