Mary Ingalls, the county fiduciary supervisor, moved that the Greenbrier County Commission approve $381,664.39 in arts and recreation awards at the commission's regular meeting. Commissioners approved the allocation by voice vote.
The grants package covers part of $536,664.31 in requests submitted for the 2025–26 cycle; 29 applications were received. Ingalls said two grant requests were not awarded because they included expenses that were not eligible under the county's grant rules and that staff would publish a list of approvals and denials on the county website.
Commissioners emphasized cost variability for field materials. The chair noted that some groups reported paying dramatically different prices for supplies: “one group's estimate was $4,500 for 1 ton of material,” the chair said, and commissioners asked staff to perform a countywide assessment of ball fields and to explore bulk purchasing options to reduce costs and improve equitable disbursement across groups.
In presenting the motion, Ingalls said the approved amount represents an initial installment of awards and that staff would follow up with the groups on disbursement details and any remaining paperwork. The commission did not modify award amounts during the meeting.
Next steps: county staff will post the full list of awards and denials on the Greenbrier County website and return analysis and recommendations on a bulk‑purchase approach for field materials and supplies.
