Superintendent announces safety upgrades, after-school partnership and student achievements

The Laurel School District superintendent updated the board on a suite of safety and student programs during the meeting.
On safety, the superintendent (S4) said the district is “continuing prioritizing school safety” and is fully implementing the Standard Response Protocol at Laurel Middle High School and elementary schools. He also announced a new weapons-detection system installed at Laurel Middle High School, with accessories added for other sites.
"The standard response protocol is being fully implemented at Laurel Middle High School and also at our elementary schools," S4 said, adding: "we have a new weapons detection system that has been rolled out [at] Laurel Middle High School, and also accessories to that have been added for Nalala and LEIS." The superintendent said staff and families would receive the new systems and related subscriptions “soon.”
Academically and extracurricularly, S4 noted literacy initiatives tied to "I Love to Read Month," Black History Month programming, a mock trial by gifted-and-talented students and representation in the Sussex County Honors band. He also recognized athletic achievements: Laurel High School’s varsity wrestling team won the Southern Division championship for the fourth consecutive year and coach Zach Toedbein was named Enliven Conference Coach of the Year; Toedbein (introduced during recognition) thanked the board and identified student athletes who joined him onstage.
The superintendent also said the district is planning an after-school partnership with the Boys & Girls Club to provide programs such as DJing, sound reduction, and sports reporting; the club will seek grant support and offer peer-leader opportunities to Laurel students. He said a grant will be pursued to fund the programming and that the district is “looking forward to rolling it out.”
The update concluded with a note that preliminary assessment numbers and a tax-rate adjustment are in process and will be presented to the board in future meetings.
