LPGE board allows Chamber to work with superintendent on permanent Soldier's Field rink

The Long Prairie‑Grey Eagle School Dist. School Board voted to allow the Chamber of Commerce to work with the superintendent on developing Soldier's Field into a permanent outdoor rink, after a resident detailed a plan that included donated rink boards, a potential donated Zamboni and proposed concrete footings.

Board discussion followed a public comment in which a resident who identified community volunteers and donations said the field needs leveling and infrastructure work. "So to level it would make the ice much better and we could use, heavier equipment," the resident said, describing differences in elevation and the need for footings and a storage structure for a Zamboni.

The board questioned ownership and lease arrangements for the parcel and noted physical constraints such as wells under the site. A board member framed the formal proposal as allowing the Chamber and the superintendent to "develop the land at Soldier's Field with leveling and permanent boards". The motion received a second and passed by voice vote.

Supporters argued the project would provide a year‑round recreational asset for children and families; opponents and questioners raised concerns about permanently removing a portion of the softball field, long‑term maintenance, liability and storage. Board members also noted the city currently holds insurance for activities on the site under the existing lease arrangements discussed in the meeting.

The immediate outcome is limited to authorization to proceed with planning and coordination: the Chamber and district administration will work together on a vision plan for footings, leveling and storage; any construction, land sale or long‑term commitments will depend on further administrative steps and agreements. The board recorded the motion as carried.
