The Nome City Council unanimously adopted Resolution 26-4-03 declaring May 5, 2026 Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) Awareness Day.
Council member Henderson moved to adopt the resolution, and council member Miller seconded the motion; the roll-call vote recorded in the meeting transcript shows affirmative votes and the motion passed.
Following adoption, Diala Johnson, tribal resources director for the Village of Solomon, told the council the resolution supports ongoing local remembrance and prevention efforts and described plans for a May 5 walk and vigil. Johnson said the walk will open at Old Saint Joe’s (03:30 for sign-making) with the walk starting at 04:30 at Northwest Campus and returning to Old Saint Joe’s for a vigil-style healing circle. Participants will receive red bags with names and LED lights to display in honor of those who are missing or lost.
“This resolution is meaningful. It doesn’t start the work, but it strengthens it,” Johnson said, and invited council members and residents to take part in the event.
The council recorded the resolution’s passage and staff noted coordination with tribal partners and community organizations to support the May 5 events.
