Resident raises questions about Arctic Deep Draft Port fuel infrastructure; staff says fuel facilities are privately owned

A resident speaking during public comment cited a news article that described the Arctic Deep Draft Port Project in Nome as designed to serve as a refueling and resupply facility for U.S. Navy and Coast Guard vessels and asked whether the city would provide fuel storage.

"Where are the fuel tanks going? Because we're gonna be a giant gas station," the resident asked after reading the article aloud. Staff responded that fuel infrastructure for that project would be privately owned and that the city would not be managing fuel tank siting or storage as part of port operations.

A staff member clarified the city’s role: "It's privately owned," staff said, adding that any private operator would need to coordinate with city and port staff on siting and operational requirements but that the port itself was not proposing fuel storage. Commissioners noted they had limited visibility into private planning and encouraged public and private parties to communicate plans earlier rather than later.
