Board highlights students and staff; district to host April 'Grow Our Own' Career Expo

The Laurel School District Board of Education opened its March 19 meeting with a series of recognitions for students and staff, and the superintendent and district leaders outlined a new community-focused hiring event.
Superintendent Dr. Larimore introduced the Sussex County honors band members from Laurel Middle High School and invited music director Jason Rogers to name the students selected for the honors band. Rogers named Hallie Wilkerson, Jordan Molina, Devonte Charles, Kamari Haushens, Andrew Carey and Josie Cruz; he also noted a senior flutist, Susan Shahid, who could not attend the meeting.
The board recognized sixth-grade gifted-and-talented mock-trial participants; the teacher identified in the meeting as Mrs. Slingenfeldt described the mock-trial curriculum (starting with a classroom exercise about the "big bad wolf" and evolving into a unit on music copyright law) and named participating pupils. The principal (introduced as Mrs. Kedra) presented reading-month results, saying the district recorded a total of 7,187 books read across early childhood, preschool and kindergarten programs and naming top readers and classrooms.
Superintendent Dr. Larimore also recognized building-level staff awards, naming Educational Support Staff of the Year, behavioral health professionals of the year, and teachers of the year for each building.
Andrea Yoder, introduced by the superintendent as the district's HR director and director of student nutrition, described a planned "Grow Our Own Career Expo" on April 2. The event is intended to connect local job candidates to district vacancies, provide information and resources for current employees, and support recruitment to fill staffing needs.
The recognitions and announcements preceded routine business (finance update, policy readings and votes) and the meeting adjourned at about 7:47 p.m.
