Killian aldermen accept canvass and introduce 1% sales tax ordinance to fund public safety and infrastructure

At its July 13 meeting, the Town of Killian accepted the June 27 election canvass and introduced an ordinance to impose a 1% sales and use tax for 10 years starting Oct. 1, 2026; proposed allocations are 50% public safety/disaster, 25% infrastructure, 10% parks/beautification and 15% other town needs. A public hearing is set for Aug. 20.
Mayor Caleb Atwell read the canvass of votes from the special election held June 27 and the board voted to accept the results by motion of Alderman Corey Beasley, seconded by Alderman Wesley Bignar. The board then introduced an ordinance to levy a one percent sales and use tax for a 10-year period beginning Oct. 1, 2026.
The proposed ordinance specifies revenue allocation: 50% to public safety and disaster management, 25% to maintenance and improvement of infrastructure, roads and drainage, 10% to beautification and parks, and 15% to other legal purposes of the Town. Mayor Atwell announced a public hearing on the tax will take place at the next town hall meeting on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 6:00 p.m.
Board members recorded unanimous support during the introduction and the canvass acceptance (yeas: Bignar, Beasley, Guthrie, Ronnie Sharp; no nays; Alderman Trevor Clardy absent). No final adoption vote on the sales tax occurred at this session; the ordinance was introduced and will return for public comment and later action following the public hearing.
