Raton board discusses construction timeline, demolition hurdles and use of remaining GO Bond funds

Board members and district staff used the June 18 meeting to review capital planning as the district moves into construction for a new building.
Myra Baird told the board she is preparing the ICIP application and requested input on the DFA list. She reported about $230,000 remains from the 2021 GO Bond and must be spent by September 2026. The agenda included scope-of-work items for Tiger Stadium and the press box.
Baird said the current Maintenance Building needs demolition because of septic-system issues; the district has discussed acquiring the Team Builders building from the County to use for Maintenance operations. PFSA will cover demolition costs for the old buildings, Baird said. Board Member Ryan Boone noted the planned demolition of Columbian School is complicated by a historic-registry issue; he said the district is working to remove the building from the registry before demolition can proceed.
Member Ted Kamp, who attended a district visit to Des Moines with other board members and staff, said the Des Moines community favored a metal roof for its new school. Kamp asked staff to explore the feasibility of a hybrid roofing system for the district's project; Superintendent Kristie Medina said she will consult project managers about that option. Kamp also raised the possibility of placing teacherages on vacant lots after existing school buildings are removed; Medina suggested revisiting the idea after construction is complete.
No formal capital resolutions or appropriations were approved during the meeting; board action on specific scope items will be addressed on future agendas.
