Painesville council unanimously accepts state and federal public‑safety grants

Painesville City Council on June 15 unanimously approved two measures to accept reimbursement and grant funding for public‑safety equipment.
Police Chief Dan Waterman told council the city had applied for and received reimbursement through the Ohio Law Enforcement Body Armor Program. Council suspended rules and adopted Resolution 35‑26 by roll call vote; the suspension and adoption motions were moved by Paul Hach and seconded by Lori DiNallo and carried 7‑0.
Fire Chief Tom Hummel described the city’s application to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) to replace aging cardiac monitors and to purchase automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and related equipment. Hummel said the department’s newest monitor is six years old, parts are being discontinued by the manufacturer, and replacement through continued repair was no longer feasible. He said the department requested acceptance of the AFG and, if awarded, the total grant would be just under $300,000 to cover three new cardiac monitors, seven AEDs, service contracts and ancillary equipment. The required 10% local match is estimated at approximately $27,000 and will be covered by a budget adjustment to be presented to council in July from a closed 2.36 Fire Levy project; Hummel said there would be no new financing cost to the city.
Council suspended readings and adopted Resolution 36‑26 on first reading (motions by Christine Shoop; adoption second by Nick Augustine); the final vote was 7‑0.
Separately, Finance Director Bill Parkinson reminded council that the 2027 Tax Budget was on second reading; a public hearing is scheduled for July 20, 2026 at 6:45 p.m., and the item will proceed to a third reading.
