Huntington council approves sheriff patrol contract and collections resolution; parking ordinance fails first reading

The Huntington Common Council on Feb. 25 approved a renewed contract with the county sheriffs office for dedicated patrol hours and authorized a collections contract for delinquent water and sewer accounts, while a proposed parking ordinance failed at first reading.
Sgt. Eric Colton presented the sheriffs contract to the council and said the agreement is unchanged from the previous year. Colton described the contract as providing dedicated patrol hours for Huntington and explained that "additional duties agreed by both parties" could include extra patrols for school events or special occasions such as the Catfish Derby. After a brief recess, Councilor McKay moved to approve the 2025-26 contract; the motion passed on a roll-call vote (Boxberger, yes; McKay, yes; Brust, yes; Mathews, yes; Power, yes; Hanks, yes).
City Recorder Siobhan Boxberger presented Resolution 2.01.2025 to authorize the city recorder to contract with Cam Credits of La Grande to pursue delinquent water and sewer bills. The council approved the resolution on a roll-call vote (Boxberger, yes; McKay, absent; Brust, yes; Mathews, yes; Power, yes; Hanks, yes).
On the Parking Ordinance (Ordinance 2025.01), Boxberger read the revised ordinance in full at the meeting. Councilor Brust voiced concern about fair enforcement and urged that the council adhere to the rules; the ordinance requires unanimous approval at first reading. Councilor McKay moved to approve at first reading and Mr. Power seconded, but the item failed because the vote was not unanimous (Boxberger, yes; McKay, absent; Brust, no; Mathews, yes; Power, yes; Hanks, yes). The ordinance will return for further consideration at the next meeting.
The meeting also opened with routine business: approval of the Jan. 21 minutes (motion by Mr. Power, seconded by Mr. Brust) and staff reports that included administrative and utilities updates.
The council adjourned at 8:05 p.m. The next regular meeting is scheduled per the council calendar.
