Cloud County reviews budget, approves two corrections hires and hears department updates

The Cloud County Board of Commissioners reviewed the county’s Budget Status and Fund Status reports as of June 30, 2026, recording an ending cash balance of $15,506,308.32. The board approved payroll expenses totaling $186,166.84 and payroll deductions and benefits totaling $77,359.08 as shown in the minutes.
The board voted unanimously on personnel actions: Lane Feight was approved as a Corrections Officer (E1), effective July 1, 2026, and Spencer Edwards was approved as a Corrections Officer II (H1), effective July 8, 2026. The motion to hire was made by Commissioner Ron Copple and seconded by Commissioner Dannie Kearn.
Solid Waste Director Mike Hake reported that Republic County requested Cloud County purchase an additional trailer. The meeting minutes also list recycling center sales figures exactly as recorded: cardboard 43,868 (unit recorded as "tons" in the minutes), aluminum 18,660 lbs at $0.80 a ton recorded in the minutes, steel 43,216 lbs at $130 a ton, #2 milk jugs 17,953 lbs (noted at $1,000 a ton), and #2 colored plastic 9,500 lbs at $160 a ton. The minutes display mixed units and price-per-ton figures; the record transcribes these values as stated by the Solid Waste Director.
Emergency Management staff (Makenna Haas) and Clint Prohaska of KCAMP (by phone) discussed bids to repair hail damage on the EM truck; the minutes record discussion but no decision to award a contract. Health Department Administrator Tonya Sulanka reported staff will attend the Safe Kids Conference in Salina on July 9; calibration of hearing equipment at LCNCK is planned and the equipment may need replacement; the ATL Grant deadline is extended to July 31; and the Family Planning audit went well with a date to be set for an Advisory Board meeting.
The board also approved abatement 2026-138 with a net change of ($926.50) and a refund of $926.50, approved the June 29, 2026 minutes, and adjourned at 1:52 p.m. until July 13, 2026.
