Nicholas Richard Thompson, deputy chief of staff for the mayor's office, presented the slate to the committee and said the mayor selected nominees to reflect both geographic wards and different military-service backgrounds. "They've all served in the military except for Lisa Garcia, who is a non vet," Thompson said, and added that several nominees are active with local veteran organizations and regional councils.
Committee members asked about documentation of veteran status and board size. A committee member asked whether applicants had submitted DD-214 forms; Thompson said the forms (DD-214) were brought to interviews and that staff will collect and provide them on request. He confirmed the AVAC is a 13-member board and that filling these seats will provide a quorum so the council can begin meeting and recruit additional members.
The resolution listed the nominees as Lisa Garcia (Ward 4), Robert Dabney (described in the presentation as not a resident but active in Aurora), James Reeves (Ward 6), Andre Marche (Ward 9), Brian Thomas (Ward 9) and Deja/ Daja Wayne (Ward 3). The presentation identified a mix of service branches among the nominees; Thompson said nominees are engaged with groups such as the VFW and other veteran organizations.
A motion to approve the resolution was offered and seconded by committee members; the committee approved the appointments by a 3-0 vote. The meeting record shows an earlier procedural motion (file 26-0422) to approve the July 7, 2026 minutes carried 3-0 as well.
Thompson said staff will retain and, on request, provide veterans' documentation and will assist the newly constituted AVAC as it recruits remaining members. The committee adjourned at 03:07.
