Coquille School Board adopts Houghton Mifflin science materials and Wayfinder SEL curriculum for 2024–25

The Coquille School District Board unanimously approved two curriculum adoptions: a Houghton Mifflin science program and the Wayfinder social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum.
A curriculum team led by Tanya Sinko and John Ward presented the science recommendation and described the district’s review process. The team said the district will begin the Houghton Mifflin adoption in the 2024–25 school year as part of a seven-year curriculum cycle and that providing a fifth-grade science course will support state testing that starts in sixth grade. The presenters described the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) framework as the instructional basis for the materials.
On SEL, the district counseling team (including Tanya Sinko, Joan Oakey and others) recommended Wayfinder, a digital SEL program. The board record notes that the Oregon Department of Education requires districts to provide an SEL curriculum by September 2024 and that several Oregon districts reported positive feedback on Wayfinder.
Steve Britton moved to approve Discussion/Action items 9.1 (SEL) and 9.2 (science); Heather Echavarria seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The minutes note the board will begin implementation and that staff will follow the usual curriculum-adoption cycle for rollout and training.
