Tanya Sinko, the district's Title III coordinator, told the Coquille School District 8 board on March 13 that the district serves approximately 22 students the state now calls Multi Language English Learners. She said the students range from recent arrivals to those in the program for several years and are served at all five district buildings.
Sinko said the district has five teachers endorsed in ESOL and that Principal Armando Ruiz provides interpretation support. She described new curricular purchases that will let students access the same classroom materials in their home language while hearing the English-language version in class. Staff also have handheld translating pens that can scan English text and play it back in a student's language.
On professional development, Sinko noted six district staff attended the Multi Language Conference sponsored by COSA and flagged three takeaways: an emphasis on ORACY and its link to early literacy, the role of storytelling when students can speak but not yet read their home language, and emerging use-cases for artificial intelligence to support English-language acquisition.
The presentation was informational; the board received the report and asked no follow-up questions during the meeting. No policy changes or funding decisions were made at this session regarding Title III services.
