Maysville mayor and emergency services director outline warming center availability

On "Minute with the Mayor" at the Emergency Service Building, the mayor and Tony Lees, director of the Emergency Service Building, discussed how Maysville operates warming centers for cold weather.

The mayor opened the segment by saying, "I've been getting some questions about warming centers in Maysville," and asked Lees to explain how the system works. Lees said the city maintains a list of several centers that "as needed, they will be activated." He added, "They're not always available. They're not always open," and noted many facilities serve dual purposes, such as churches or volunteer fire departments.

Lees described a city map used to mark center status: the red markers indicate standby sites and the green markers indicate centers that are already open and allow walk-ins. "We have a list of names and numbers people can call," Lees said, describing how residents can request that a standby site be opened during cold spells.

Addressing how first responders fit into the plan, Lees said dispatchers know where the centers are located so an officer who "runs into somebody" can call dispatch and get the contact information. He also said the city holds keys to one facility to expedite access when necessary.

The mayor closed the segment by thanking Lees and the community for supporting the warming centers and stressing the city's efforts to make the sites accessible to families during colder weather.
