Applicant Cesar Huizar sought approval for two large signs on a new plaza building; CED Eddie Salazar said the proposed signs are approximately 90 square feet and therefore do not meet current Mesilla code. Salazar noted nearby businesses also have large signs, and commissioners discussed updating the sign ordinance. Commissioner Martha Mulvihill moved to postpone the first request until the sign code is reviewed and Commissioner Stevie Paz seconded; the motion passed 3‑1, with Commissioner Rosemary Alvillar voting no. The second, identical request received the same vote.
The commission’s postponement keeps the applications open while staff and commissioners consider whether the town should amend its sign regulations. The plaza construction is not expected to be complete for another two to three months, giving the commission time to review the code.
