Board approves additional contracts for behavioral supports in special education
Summary
The board approved additional service contracts for certified behavior analysts (BCBAs) and registered behavior technicians (RBTs) to fill gaps in district special-education staffing. Finance will use general operations funds to pay contracted providers while recruitment continues.
The Berkeley County Board approved July 20 additional special-education service contracts to provide behavioral supports districtwide.
Executive Director of Special Education David Dillon told the board contractors were necessary to meet students’ IEPs when the district cannot fill in‑house positions. "These providers play an important role in providing support for students with behavioral needs..." Dillon said, describing BCBA and RBT contracts as a way to ensure continuity of services while recruitment continues.
Funding for the contracts will come from the district's general operation budget, Dillon said. Board member Mister Martin moved to approve the contracts and Doctor Felk seconded; the board voted in favor and the motion carried.
Dillon emphasized that the contracts are intended as temporary measures to maintain compliance with federal and state special‑education requirements while the district continues active recruitment of hard‑to‑fill positions.
Next steps: contracts will be executed under the general operations budget and district staffing efforts will continue; administration will report to the board on contract use and recruitment progress.
