Anamosa City Council approves ambulance storage, appointments and routine business; ordinance reading set aside

At its Jan. 13 meeting, the Anamosa City Council unanimously approved storage of an ambulance at the Anamosa Fire Department, appointed a new volunteer firefighter, adopted its 2025 meeting schedule and approved routine pay requests; the first reading of Ordinance 965 was held but declared invalid because a required public hearing had not been held.
The Anamosa City Council met Jan. 13, 2025, at 6:00 P.M. at the Anamosa Library & Learning Center and handled a slate of routine city matters, approving an ambulance storage request, appointments and its calendar of regular meetings while pausing an ordinance reading that lacked a required public hearing.
Mayor Rod Smith called the meeting to order and roll was taken; a quorum of council members was present. On a motion by Council Member Rich Crump, seconded by Council Member Dan Smith, the council approved the consent agenda, which included the Dec. 23, 2024 meeting minutes, current bills and liquor licenses. The motion passed on a unanimous roll call vote.
Council then held the first reading of Ordinance 965, which would amend the Anamosa Code of Ordinances, Chapter 165.23(3), on supplementary district regulations for fences. The first reading was moved by Council Member Kay Smith and seconded by Crump; the council recorded a unanimous roll call vote but stated the reading was invalid because the required public hearing under Iowa law had not been held. The council said a public hearing date would be announced later.
The council adopted Resolution 2025-01, setting the City Council's regular meeting dates for calendar year 2025, on a motion by Council Member Todd Weimer, seconded by Dan Smith. The resolution passed by unanimous roll call.
Stephanie Musser, Emergency Services Manager at Jones Regional Medical Center, requested permission for Anamosa Air Ambulance Services to store an ambulance at the Anamosa Fire Department. Fire Chief Dan Frank voiced support, saying the arrangement would provide learning opportunities for the fire department. On a motion by Crump, seconded by Weimer, the council approved the ambulance storage request; the roll call vote was unanimous.
The council also approved the application of Lawson Wilson to join the Anamosa Volunteer Fire Department following a motion by Crump, seconded by Brooke Gombert. The council approved the Mayor's recommended board and committee appointments for calendar year 2025 on a motion by Crump, seconded by Kay Smith; both motions passed unanimously.
At the end of the meeting, on a motion by Dan Smith, seconded by Crump, the council approved consent-agenda pay requests totaling $7,171.25. The motion carried on a unanimous roll call.
The meeting adjourned at 6:19 P.M. and the minutes were attested by City Clerk Jeana Less-David with Mayor Rod Smith and City Administrator Jeremiah Hoyt signing the record. The council said it will announce the public hearing date for Ordinance 965 at a later time.
