District staff presented preliminary plans for a facilities-focused bond project Thursday, estimating the scope at roughly $6.8 million with about $5.1 million earmarked for construction costs.
Brad, the staff member who delivered the presentation, said the district has contracted Schmidt’s Associates architects to help scope multiple maintenance projects across the system. Planned work includes replacing several D- and F-rated roofs within the next one to two years, repaving lots at multiple sites (including the Walnut Street side of Muncie Central High School), adding exterior walkway canopies at Longfellow and Northview and making vocational-area improvements at the career center.
Brad said some roofing work already underway this summer covers three locations and that the district inherited some parking areas from Ivy Tech years ago. The field house project (new boiler/chiller area) is in active construction; footers and the concrete floor were poured recently, but Brad said the field house will not be finished before school starts.
Why it matters: district officials said this set of maintenance projects aims to preserve building-condition and safety while limiting long-term replacement costs; officials intend to present more detailed costs and a bond plan at the next board meeting.
