Pascagoula Recreation Commission approves minutes and hears updates on pier, disc golf and sports complex work

The Pascagoula Recreation Commission met Jan. 7, 2025, and approved its previous meeting minutes unanimously. Commissioners also received updates on major parks projects and ongoing recreation programs.
Mike McElhaney moved to approve the minutes as written; Chris Grace seconded the motion and the commission approved it unanimously. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Aulton Vann at 5:30 p.m., and adjourned at 5:50 p.m.
The commission was told the Beach Park pier project is scheduled to begin Feb. 16 and is expected to take approximately 8–12 weeks to complete. Separately, the River Park Disc Golf Course application was submitted to the Mississippi Department of Transportation on Jan. 6, 2026; the commission will seek funding after MDOT grants approval.
Updates on the Sports Complex covered a number of maintenance and improvement items: installation of Wee Ball fencing is underway; baseball organizers have purchased cameras for four fields, which will be installed by the Pascagoula Parks and Recreation Department; new sod has been laid on Fields 4, 5 and 6 around home plates and first- and third-base coaches’ boxes; a crimson stone application and laser grading are scheduled for this month; and pressure washing of buildings, dugouts and sidewalks is in progress.
Commission minutes also record Parks and Recreation program updates: regularly scheduled programs such as aerobics, karate, afterschool activities, pickleball and line dancing are operating as planned, and the Senior Center continues to offer bingo, pottery, jewelry making and chair yoga. Youth basketball play began Jan. 5 and will run through the first week of March, concluding with a postseason tournament. Youth baseball registration is open Dec. 1 through Feb. 2; youth softball registration runs Dec. 1 through Feb. 6.
The minutes note that the lowest bid for the IG Levy prefabricated restroom was approved by the City Council on Jan. 6, 2026. During the meeting Commissioner Joseph Powell requested an update on the Wall of Fame; no status was recorded in the minutes beyond the request.
The commission adjourned at 5:50 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 4, 2026, at the Pascagoula Recreation Center.
