Norwalk Traffic Authority approves temporary road closures for three annual events

The Norwalk Traffic Authority on July 20 unanimously approved temporary road closures for three routine community events: the Saint Anne's feast, the Pine Point Labor Day party and the Norwalk Police Department’s National Night Out.

Mayor Barbara Smith opened the meeting and the authority moved quickly through event requests that organizers described as annual and unchanged from prior years. John Vino, who spoke for the Saint Anne’s feast, said: “We're having our Saint Anne's feast, July 23 through the 26th, and we'll need parking ... blocking on Hendricks Avenue in front of 16 Hendricks.” The authority approved the partial closure for the event with no recorded opposition.

Miss Powell described the Pine Point Labor Day party as a private‑property event that nonetheless requires a short closure on a Norwalk‑maintained road at Crescent Beach. She told the authority the organizers will provide private security and that the closure would begin with setup around 4 p.m. and the road would reopen at 10 p.m. Commissioners asked staff to note the 10 p.m. reopen time in the record; the motion passed unanimously.

Commissioner Nate Sumpter moved the closure for the Norwalk Police Department’s National Night Out, and Ben, speaking on behalf of the police department, said the event is planned for Tuesday evening, Aug. 11, with activities 5–8 p.m. and road closures from 4–9 p.m. on Monroe Street (Chestnut to South Main) and South Main (Monroe to Elizabeth). Staff said the closures mirror prior years and that residents will receive notice; the authority approved the closures unanimously.

Why it matters: the approvals allow organizers to plan logistics and for staff to finalize detour maps and neighbor notifications. The authority recorded no objections and asked staff to follow up with written notices to affected residents and businesses.

The authority adjourned after the votes; its next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 17.
