Parker said the proposed extension would lock in another five years of service and $60 million, and argued it would be better to put the work back out to bid so Metro could consider bringing routes in-house. Matt Purvis, council liaison for Waste Services, said removing the extension would permit bidding the work and allow the department to determine the appropriate mix of in-house and contracted routes.
Council members discussed the department’s operational changes (including shifting pickup schedules) and cost pressures residents have seen. Council member Ellis noted household costs and urged competition through bidding. The amendment and the amended contract passed unanimously at the committee meeting.
