Maple Grove Council backs resolutions to pursue regional transportation grants

The Maple Grove City Council on June 15 voted unanimously to adopt resolutions of support for four regional solicitation grant applications aimed at expanding pedestrian, trail and transit options in the city.
Transit and Transportation Planner Valverde told the council that the Metropolitan Council’s biennial regional solicitation accepts funding requests for transportation projects and, for this cycle, includes active-transportation funds from the regional sales tax. Valverde said the city plans to apply for funding for three projects led by the city and to provide a resolution of support for a partnership project with Metro Transit, and staff provided letters of support for two additional agency projects located in Maple Grove.
The projects named by staff were: Fernbrook Lane pedestrian improvements, southeast Rice Lake trail reconstruction, a Route 781 service expansion to all-day 30-minute headways, and Metro Transit’s local route extension to Maple Grove. Public Works/Engineering Director Chris LaBounty clarified that the two trail projects would be funded from the city’s street reconstruction fund while the two transit-related projects would be funded by Maple Grove’s motor vehicle sales tax allocation.
Councilmember Kristy Janigo moved to adopt the resolutions of support and Councilmember Mike Ostaffe seconded. Mayor Mark Steffenson called the question and the motion carried with five ayes and no nays.
The council’s action provides formal local support needed for the city and partner agencies to submit grant applications to the Metropolitan Council; staff will proceed with the applications and coordination with Metro Transit and other agencies as proposed.
