Commissioners spent a significant portion of their July 16 meeting reviewing a communications mock-up for permanent Measure J plaques and signage and approved a small subcommittee to finalize design and implementation details.
Staff presented a plaque mock-up prepared by the communications department and said the city council requested permanent recognition for Measure J-funded projects; staff also said grantee agreements require site recognition where feasible. Commissioners raised design, grammar and visibility concerns and suggested a small group should review the mock-up in the field rather than decide in a single meeting.
Commissioner Travis suggested separating the city logo and the Measure J logo and simplifying the sentence to read something like, “With thanks to the residents of Palm Springs,” rather than a long sentence naming council members. Commissioner Hopkins recommended forming a small committee to test the design in real sites and to consider media assets so plaques can be used in news coverage.
Staff noted there is a $50,000 annual budget item for plaques for two years (totaling $100,000 available). Chair Peter Sipkins proposed and the commission approved creating a subcommittee to work quickly on design and vendor options. Commissioner Hopkins agreed to chair the subcommittee, assisted by Vice Chair Jason Kravitz and Commissioner John Laino; the commission asked the group to report back in September or October.
The subcommittee vote to create the committee was made as a motion and passed in a recorded vote (motion passed). The commission asked staff to consult vendors and bring design options and cost estimates to the subcommittee.
The plaque discussion will resume with the subcommittee’s recommendations and with a fuller look at sites and media assets to ensure broader public visibility of Measure J-funded projects.
