Commissioners form advisory committee, continue wake‑enhanced motorboat ordinance hearing to Sept. 29

County Administrator Charles Thomas told the Mason County Board of Commissioners on July 21 that the wake‑enhanced motorboats ordinance is a continuation of earlier hearings and that staff is recommending the commission continue the matter to give a newly formed advisory committee time to study options and advise the board.
Thomas said staff received committee applications and that the advisory body will include six members—two members per district where applications were received and two technical advisers—tasked with developing recommendations for the commissioners. Staff will coordinate scheduling and likely poll committee members to find suitable meeting dates; Thomas said the committee should hold at least one meeting that allows public input.
Commissioners debated committee composition and the limits of the committee’s authority, emphasizing that any committee findings will be recommendations only and that the board will make the final decision. A commissioner moved to table the hearing and set the next hearing date for Sept. 29 at 9:15 a.m.; the motion was seconded and the hearing was continued to that date.
The board did not adopt an ordinance at the meeting. County staff and commissioners asked that committee members attempt to reach compromises and that at least one committee meeting include public comment, after which the committee’s recommendations will return to the board for consideration.
