Kure Beach council agrees to work with Disney Entertainment on film permit for 'Saltwater,' asks for details on parking and turtle nesting

At the June 15 meeting the Kure Beach Town Council gave consensus to continue working with Disney Entertainment on a location permit request for the production Saltwater and asked staff to return next month with final dates and more detailed logistics.
Recreation & Events Director Nikki Keely introduced Location Manager Lindsey Fort, who said the production details were still evolving and that she had spoken with downtown businesses and planned rentals of the Kure Beach Pier and Ocean View locations. MPT David Heglar asked whether businesses had been contacted and expressed concern about parking impacts to downtown businesses. Commissioner Connie Mearkle asked specifically whether any turtle nests would be affected. Keely said the area is "not a heavily nested area" and that staff had met with the Coastal Area Management Authority (CAMA) to address those issues.
The council expressed interest in proceeding but asked for a return presentation with final filming times and dates, confirmed business outreach and a plan for any coastal protection measures or permits required under state rules.
Next steps: Location Manager Lindsey Fort and Recreation staff will gather final schedule details, document business outreach and clarify any CAMA or other permitting needs and return at the July council meeting.
