Parks commission discusses tree-planting drive, servitude replanting and mulch concerns

The Parks and Parkways Commission discussed several urban-forest and horticulture items during its May 4 meeting. Planner Rad Dickson told the commission that caladium bulbs had arrived and were ready for distribution this weekend; staff also reviewed setup plans for a Mothers’ Day bulb sale set for May 9.
Commissioner Will Afton recapped a March tree-planting demonstration and suggested establishing an annual tree-planting demonstration each November. A participant, Scott Discon, recommended posting monthly educational information to raise awareness and support tree-planting efforts.
Commissioners also discussed replanting options for the East Causeway Approach power servitudes after trees were removed by the utility Cleco. The discussion focused on starting the replanting process, making a list of native species suitable for the servitudes and the best methods to have the plantings installed.
The commission raised concerns about the use and disallowment of rock mulch, noting aesthetic, sustainability and potential hazard considerations as well as possible impacts on tree health. No formal policy change was adopted at the meeting.
