The Sedan City Council on March 3 accepted two resignations from its police department and set a public special meeting to discuss the department's future.
Police Chief Kirk Richardson read a retirement notice effective March 31, 2026; Mayor Kathy Miller expressed gratitude for his years of service. On a motion by Adam Clark, seconded by Crystal Wade, the council voted unanimously to accept Chief Richardson's resignation (0 Nay, 3 Yay).
Officer Devin Lumley read his resignation effective March 15, 2026. The council again voted unanimously on a motion by Adam Clark, seconded by Crystal Wade, to accept Lumley's resignation (0 Nay, 3 Yay).
Council members then held multiple executive sessions under K.S.A. 75-4319(b)(1) to discuss non-elected personnel matters related to retention and terms of employment; the meeting record shows the body returned to open session with no decisions recorded. The council decided to hold a public special meeting on Friday, March 6, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. in the county commissioners' room (second floor) to outline next steps for the Police Department.
Mayor Kathy Miller, Councilmembers Adam Clark and Crystal Wade and Councilmember Wellington Butler were present for the votes. No new hires or other personnel actions were recorded in the March 3 minutes.
