The Snake River School Board of Trustees on Monday approved a resolution declaring a need for a supplemental levy of $700,000 per year for two years, voting 3-0 at the district office in Blackfoot.
The board approved the measure after hearing a presentation from district administrators on local property valuations and state funding. Chairman Lon Harrington read the resolution under Idaho Code 33-802(3) specifying the levy amount and the fiscal period: "WHEREAS ... the Board of Trustees of Snake River School District No. 52, Bingham County, State of Idaho, has determined there is a need for a supplemental levy in the amount of Seven Hundred Thousand and no/100 dollars ($700,000) per year for two (2) years, for the purpose of paying all lawful expenses of maintaining and operating the District ... for the fiscal years beginning July 1, 2027 and ending June 30, 2029," Harrington read.
Why it matters: district administrators told the board the district's total taxable property valuation rose from about $440 million in 2021 to more than $1.05 billion in 2025, a growth the presentation said has reduced levy pressure on homeowners. The presentation noted that state funding provided under House Bill 521 currently supplies about $1.6 million annually and covers the district's bond payments and most plant facility costs, but administrators warned that state funding remains uncertain and that potential cuts could require staffing adjustments.
Numbers and calculations: using the district's figures, a $700,000 levy against a $1.05 billion valuation produces roughly $66.7 per $100,000 of taxable value annually (about $5.60 per month). The meeting minutes include the district's stated figure of "about $67" per $100,000 but also record an internal calculation line reading "700,000 divided by 1,050,298,158," which the board materials presented as the basis for the estimate.
Board action: Trustee Larin Mortimer moved to approve the resolution; Trustee Carol Hepworth seconded. Roll-call votes were recorded as Hepworth, aye; Mortimer, aye; Harrington, aye. The motion carried 3-0. There were no public comments during the Public Input portion of the meeting.
Procedure and next steps: the resolution sets the levy amount and the fiscal years for which the levy is requested (July 1, 2027–June 30, 2029). The minutes do not specify subsequent procedural steps such as ballot scheduling or public hearing dates.
The board adjourned at 6:20 p.m.
