Trustees approve $109,051 grading and drainage work for district bus parking

The Snake River School Board approved a grading and drainage contract with Gale Lim Construction on Nov. 19 to address persistent flooding and icing around the district office and bus parking areas.
Superintendent Mark Kress described repeat icing and several injury claims linked to water pooling near the district office because the building sits below road level. The phase-one proposal — priced at about $109,051.50 — includes installing multiple French drains, raising soil near the bus shop door to direct runoff to grassy areas, and constructing a drywell near the gas tanks to collect water from bus traffic areas. Kress said the work will remove and regrade roughly 15–18 inches of soil and reuse much of the material; paving will be a later separate project that will require bidding when weather allows.
The board discussed whether to seek additional quotes but learned the district is below the statutory bid threshold and that Gale Lim has historically offered competitive pricing. Trustees also discussed opportunities for students in the heavy-equipment and CTE programs to observe or assist with basic surveying as part of coursework. Gale Lim indicated work could begin between Thanksgiving and Christmas and would take about two weeks, during which buses would need to park offsite.
Trustees voted unanimously to approve the Gale Lim quote on a motion by Josh Sorensen with a second from Larin Mortimer.
