Snake River board approves two new buses; travel bus approved 3–1 amid maintenance concerns

The Snake River School Board on Oct. 15 approved two bus purchases to update an aging fleet and provide backup vehicles for student transportation and activities.
Superintendent Mark Kress presented bids for a travel bus ($204,795) and a standard 72-passenger school bus ($138,803). Kress said the travel bus price increased from $174,000 last year to $204,795; state reimbursement is available but will be spread over a 12-year reimbursement schedule, leaving an estimated immediate district cost of about $31,000. Trustees discussed higher maintenance costs for rear-engine travel buses but noted other districts reported satisfactory performance.
Trustee Josh Sorensen moved to purchase the travel bus from Western Mountain Bus; the motion passed 3–1 (Lon Harrington opposed). The board then approved the 72-passenger bus purchase from Western Mountain Bus for $138,803 by a unanimous vote (4–0).
